Following Hurricane Irma, The residents of Bella Grande Condominiums in Pembroke Pines had to cautiously navigate the neighborhoods, and city streets blocked by fallen trees, and found themselves being rerouted down every street that they attempted to drive in efforts to get to the nearest store, supermarket, or restaurant that was open.
During Irma’s wrath, Residents were forced to hold up in their condos without lights and water for as long as a week.
“We had no choice except to stay put since it was too late to evacuate even when we decided we might want to do so" One Resident said. Residents were thankful that the only damage that was done was a few fallen trees, and an unattractive mess left for the grounds keepers, and landscaping companies to clean up.
The yards of many homes in Pembroke Pines remain covered in busted branches, with leaves now turning brown.
For those residents who stayed, and those who are returning to their homes, it’s an ominous scene. But windows are open, birds sing and flit into upturned trees, frogs chirp at night in pools that have surprisingly maintained their aqua blue cleanliness.
Pembroke Pines Police officers patrol the streets throughout the night and sit in unmarked cars protecting main entrances to the city. During the day, the officers monitor the streets and direct traffic especially around FPL trucks with workers at downed lines trying to restore power.
